What Is Motor Trade Road Risk Insurance?

insurance-sigining

Road risk insurance allows motor traders to drive vehicles they don’t own, for motor trade purposes. This can include:

  • Test driving customer vehicles
  • Collecting or delivering vehicles
  • Moving stock vehicles
  • Driving between garage or service locations

It is designed for individuals or businesses operating full-time or part-time in the motor trade, and is often the first step in becoming legally insured.

Levels of Cover Explained

As with private car insurance, there are three main levels of road risk cover:

Third Party Only (TPO)

The minimum legal requirement in the UK Covers damage to other people’s vehicles or property in the event of a fault or partial-fault accident Does not cover damage to vehicles in your possession

Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT)

Includes all Third Party Only cover Adds protection against fire damage or theft of a vehicle in your custody

Comprehensive

Includes all the above Covers accidental damage to vehicles in your custody, even if you’re at fault Highly recommended for anyone dealing with customer vehicles

What’s Not Covered by Road Risk Insurance?

You’ll come across two key terms in your policy:

1. Motor Trade Use : You are covered to drive any vehicle in your custody or control for business purposes—test drives, transporting vehicles, etc.

2. Social, Domestic & Pleasure (SD&P Use) : Covers only your own vehicles for personal use—such as driving to the shops or on holiday.

You are not covered to use other people’s vehicles for personal use (e.g. driving a customer’s car to the supermarket).

Do You Need Road Risk Insurance?

If you handle, drive, or move any vehicles as part of your motor trade activity, the answer is almost always yes. Without it, you’re not legally covered to drive vehicles that aren’t yours—even if they’re for business use.

Whether you're:

  • Selling cars from home
  • Running a garage or MOT station
  • Delivering vehicles to customers
  • Offering repairs or diagnostics

A Road Risk Insurance policy gives you the flexibility and legal protection you need to run your business safely.

What Our Clients Say

“Crowthorne Insurance were very useful for when I needed 28 day chassis insurance on my unregistered classic Japanese import car in order to drive it to and from an MOT for its registration. Quick replies and no fuss. The price was high considering it was only for 28 days but I guess not unusual for that kind of specialist insurance. Would use again in the future!”
Beth L
“Contact with the Cowthorne team is a pleasurable experience - they are always helpful, efficient and will search the market for the best policy.”
Peter Foister
“Went there for my Car insurance. Got a great deal better than on line and other shops. Boss was a very nice chap and the man that served me Neil ,was very helpful.and sorted me out a great deal. Yes i can recommend this company. Hope i can say the same next year when i get the renew price. If they play there cards right they may get my house and other car and holiday insurance. Thanks Crowthorne insurance.”
Ray Thorpe
“I used Crowthorne Insurance recently as a new driver, and they really helped me out. They are always friendly and polite, never kept me waiting long over the phone or e-mail, and were always happy to answer any questions I had.I had a particularly good experience talking to Jack, who went above and beyond to get me a policy which wasn't prohibitively expensive at a time when the insurance market is particularly harsh to new drivers. It would not be an exaggeration to say that thanks to his efforts, I've saved thousands of pounds.I highly recommend this company and look forward to working with them again when it's time to renew. Thanks guys!”
James Lill
